Insanity: Utah GOPer tells constituents they should be happy just to get to meet GOP law maker

The Resistance News

February 21, 2017

One of the planets’s most respected research units, Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU) recently, in a global ranking of countries on democracy, down-grader America to “Flawed Democracy.” How flawed is America’s democracy? Latest out of Utah, is that Utah Republican’s staff sneers at protesters, telling them, basically, just getting to meet the GOP law maker should make them happy.

While EIU gave the reason why, since then I have kept an eye on why? What is democracy?

Democracy (Greek: δημοκρατία, Dēmokratía literally “rule of the commoners”), in modern usage, is a system of government in which the citizens exercise power directly or elect representatives from among themselves to form a governing body, such as a parliament.[1] Democracy is sometimes referred to as “rule of the majority”.[2] Democracy was originally conceived in Classical Greece, where political representatives were chosen by a jury from amongst the male citizens: rich and poor.[citation needed] The English word dates to the 16th century, from the older Middle French and Middle Latin equivalents.

According to political scientist Larry Diamond, democracy consists of four key elements: (a) A political system for choosing and replacing the government through free and fair elections; (b) The active participation of the people, as citizens, in politics and civic life; (c) Protection of the human rights of all citizens, and (d) A rule of law, in which the laws and procedures apply equally to all citizens.[3]

So one critical aspect of democracy is that law makers represent their constituents. How do law makers do that? There are many ways, but clearly, meeting constituents is a major way.

Since Trump came to power, there has been many threats to the typical American, such as trump & GOP position on health care, with the threat of terminating Obamacare.

As a result, at GOP “Town Hall” meeting, constituents have been highly vocal, i.e. in Utah, at GOP law maker, Jason Chaffetz, there was a great up-road, including demands for Jason, who chairs Congress over-sight, to investigate Trump.

Jason left that Town Hall meeting early. But this did not just occurred at Jason’s Town Hall meeting, but this occurred all over America at GOP’s Town Hal meeting. What happened next is GOP leadership telling GOP law makers not to hold Town Hall meeting.

The latest out of Utah is the following:

Utah Republican’s staff sneers at protesters:

‘Most people would just be grateful’ to meet her (sourcesource)

Utah Republican has angered her constituents by placing strict rules on her meetings with the public.

Rep. Mia Love (R-UT) hasn’t held a town hall to discuss the Affordable Care Act or other issues with her constituents, who say the congresswoman’s office was unusually dismissive toward their concerns, reported KUTV-TV.

Realtor Terry Mitchell and two other constituents went to the lawmaker’s office in West Jordan to ask when Love would meet publicly to address voter concerns.

“I was told that we could do a meeting with four to five people at a time, in the office,” Mitchell told the TV station.

A staffer told them that no recording devices or media would be allowed into the event, whenever it was held — and they expressed frustration.

“When there’s no press — there’s no nothing, there’s no audience — she can pretty much say anything she wants to say,” said Matt Nielsen, who was at that meeting. “She can dodge pretty much any question that she wants to dodge.”

Love’s colleague, Rep. Jason Chaffetz (R-UT), was confronted by angry constituents last weekend at a widely reported town hall, and other Republican lawmakers have faced similar hostility in the early weeks of the Trump administration.

But all three were stunned by the response from Love’s district director, Laurel Price.

“She said, ‘We’re throwing you a bone, you should just take it,’” Mitchell told the TV station. “’Most people would just be grateful that they even get to meet Mia Love.’”

Mitchell said she felt insulted by Price, but Love’s office has refused to comment on the incident.

A spokesman for Love promised the congresswoman would eventually hold a town hall, but she apparently hopes to avoid what Chaffetz faced.

“She welcomes elevated dialogue and reasonable conversations with her constituents,” said spokesman Richard Piatt said in a statement. “Rep. Love has proven that she can have positive and forward-moving meetings with constituents who don’t necessarily agree with her, (but) shouting matches and verbal abuse are not what constitutes a Utah-style civic dialogue.”

Utah GOP Chairman James Evans said:

“Members of the state’s all-Republican congressional delegation

should avoid holding town hall meetings”

Utah GOP chairman advises congressional delegation avoid holding town halls (source)

SALT LAKE CITY — Utah GOP Chairman James Evans said Thursday members of the state’s all-Republican congressional delegation should avoid holding town hall meetings in the wake of the raucous crowd that turned out for Rep. Jason Chaffetz.

“I’ve asked them to delay town hall meetings because of the recent acts of violence and intimidation by several left-wing groups,” Evans said, naming Utah Indivisible, the Utah Democratic Party and Organizing for America.

Instead of traditional town hall meetings, Evans advised members of Congress hold tele-town halls by phone or limit attendance that they can better control. He offered the party’s help in screening attendees to ensure they are constituents.

Utah Democratic Party Chairman Peter Corroon said the party has used emails to encourage participation at town hall meetings no matter what congressional district voters live in.

“We aren’t encouraging people to be disruptive or encouraging them to act in any kind of violent or rude manner,” the Democratic leader said. “Why shouldn’t Democrats show up?”

Corroon said Utah Indivisible, which has more than 4,300 Facebook group members, uses tactics from the far-right tea party movement that helped defeat longtime Utah GOP Sen. Bob Bennett in 2010 to help people engage with their elected officials.

He questioned why the left shouldn’t do the same.

“It’s OK for their Republican constituents to act this way but not the Democrats? It doesn’t sound fair to me,” Corroon said.

Kellie Henderson of Utah Indivisible said she was “honestly, honestly flabbergasted at Mr. Evans’ use of scare tactics to dishonestly characterize a group of citizens trying to petition their government for change and to make their voices heard.”

Noting the group will continue its “lobbying” efforts, Henderson said it was “unfortunate that Mr. Evans, instead of engaging with our concerns or encouraging legislators keep their promise of representing their constituents, instead responds with dishonesty and mud-slinging.”

Evans said Chaffetz’s town hall meeting last week was “hijacked by organized agitators,” accusing them of surrounding what they thought was the congressman’s car and displaying “hostile, violent and deliberately disruptive behavior,” including “charging a door.”

He also said Rep. Mia Love’s home address was posted on Facebook.

“There’s a pattern here that the political left, primarily the Democrat voters and organized affiliates, lost at the ballot box and, as a result, they’ve taken this fight to the streets,” Evans said. “That is not the American way.”

Town halls are being sought out so they can be taken over by Democrats to give the appearance that the GOP congressional delegation doesn’t have voter support, he said. Currently, Evans said, none are scheduled in Utah.

More than 1,000 people filled Brighton High School’s auditorium and at least that many were turned away at Chaffetz’s town hall meeting last week. There were angry jeers from the crowd and chants of “Do your job.”

Chaffetz has said he believes there were paid protesters in attendance, prompting some participants to send him mock invoices.

Evans said he did not have proof of his claims.

“The point is, if you want me to prove this in a court of law, that’s not going to happen,” the Republican Party leader said. “This is the court of public opinion.”

On Saturday, Cottonwood Heights Police Lt. Dan Bartlett said some attendees at the Chaffetz town hall did tell officers they had come from out of state, but the majority appeared to be Utahns.

“The majority of people I talked to were from here, from all over Utah,” Bartlett said.

When asked if he knew if there any paid protesters, Bartlett said: “Not that we could tell.”
