EIU’s USA a Flawed Democracy? i.e. Chaffetz Reject Town Hall & 65% Utah Voters Who Want Trump Probed

The Resistance News

February 12, 2017

Why is America now a flawed democracy, according to the highly regarded & credible EIU? Lets look at Jason Chaffetz, a law maker at America’s Congress.

Chaffetz is a  law maker from Utah & chair of Congress House oversight, said 1,000s of protesters at his town hall on Thursday were from out of town and were “paid” to protest, cause chaos, bully and intimidate.”

Those Town Hal protesters & also 65% of Utah voters want Chaffetz to investigate Trump. Earlier, on January 2017 poll by The Salt Lake Tribune and Hinckley Institute of Politics found that 65% of registered Utah voters supported a probe into Trump’s conflicts of interest, compared to just 31% opposed.[120]

Western Journalism reports (source): At the Town Hall meet, about 1,500 people stood outside Brighton High School with signs emblazoned “Do your job” and “America is better than this.” So many attended, in fact, that Cottonwood Heights police Lt. Dan Bartlett said the department could not allow more attendants inside. Chaffetz managed to answer 13 questions in the 75-minute town hall meeting, which included no shortage of tense exchanges between the lawmaker and residents from across the state. Three focused on public lands and four on investigating Trump.

In sum, Chaffetz, is using “They were from out of town and were paid to protest” to “Justify” rejecting and ignoring the Town Hall meeting and  65% of Utah voters, both group of Americans calling for investigation into Trump.

In a series of tweets today, Paul Krugman tackled Republican reluctance to hold Trump accountable for the Flynn scandal, explaining that while “Trump is terrible” his is a “horror made possible by GOP corruption and lack of conscience.”

Meanwhile, the U.S. has been demoted from a full democracy to a flawed democracy for the first time, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU). “Trust in political institutions is an essential component of well-functioning democracies. Yet surveys by Pew, Gallup and other polling agencies have confirmed that public confidence in government has slumped to historic lows in the U.S. This has had a corrosive effect on the quality of democracy,” the report found.

Who is Jason E. Chaffetz:

Jason E. Chaffetz is the U.S. representative for Utah and a member of the Republican Party. He has been the chairman of the United States House Committee on Oversight and Government Reform since 2015

Chaffetz came to prominence in 2015 for his extensive investigations into Hillary Clinton. He rescinded his endorsement of Donald Trump in early October 2016 but expressed his intent to vote for him three weeks later. Having investigated Hillary Clinton and the Obama administration extensively, Chaffetz drew criticism after the 2016 election for an unwillingness to investigate or challenge what ethics experts describe as Trump’s “nakedly unconstitutional” conflicts of interest.

Ethical concerns

As chairman of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee (which is tasked with investigating “waste, fraud, and abuse” in the executive branch), Chaffetz has been criticized for showing a disinterest in investigating President Trump’s conflicts of interest and for failing to criticize him for not resolving ethical questions.[117][118] Chaffetz has said that Trump’s global financial ties don’t merit a congressional investigation: “It’s interesting, because under Section 208 of the criminal code, the president is exempt from almost every conflict-of-interest [law]… I think the president has a duty and an obligation to live up to the Constitution and the law. And what he’s required to do by law, it appears he’s done.”[118] However, ethics experts have said that Trump’s business conflicts and his failure to resolve them are “nakedly unconstitutional.”[118]

Chaffetz has also attacked those who have brought attention to Trump’s conflicts of interest. In January 2017, Chaffetz threatened to investigate the independent Office of Government Ethics after the Office had questioned Trump’s commitment to resolve conflicts of interest.[119] According to the New York Times, “Chaffetz, in his letter, noted his committee’s authority to reauthorize the office, a hint that it could perhaps be shut down.”[119] Richard W. Painter, a former ethics lawyer in the George W. Bush administration, said that Chaffetz was trying to punish the Office of Government Ethics for criticizing Trump.[119] A January 2017 poll by The Salt Lake Tribune and Hinckley Institute of Politics found that 65% of registered Utah voters supported a probe into Trump’s conflicts of interest, compared to just 31% opposed.[120]

Chaffetz said in January 2017 that he would continue his investigations into Hillary Clinton.[121] In October 2016, when Clinton seemed likely to become the next President, Chaffetz said that he was already preparing for ‘years’ of investigations of Clinton.[122]

EIU Report of America Being

A Flawed Democracy

The U.S. has been demoted from a full democracy to a flawed democracy for the first time, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit (EIU).

Norway topped the EIU’s list of full democracies last year, followed by Iceland, Sweden, New Zealand and Denmark; Canada and Ireland tied for sixth place. The U.K., which also experienced a volatile 2016 with its Brexit referendum, was ranked 16th amid a rise in popular engagement and membership of political parties.

America’s score fell to 7.98 last year from 8.05 in 2015, below the 8.00 threshold for a full democracy, the EIU announced in a report on Wednesday. That put the world’s largest economy on the same footing as Italy, a country known for its fractious politics.

Every year, the firm’s Democracy Index provides a snapshot of global democracy by scoring countries on five categories: electoral process and pluralism; civil liberties; the functioning of government; political participation; and political culture. Nations are then classified under four types of governments: full democracy, flawed democracy, hybrid regime and authoritarian regime.

A flawed democracy is a country with free elections but weighed down by weak governance, an underdeveloped political culture and low levels of political participation, according to the EIU. Other flawed democracies in 2016 included Japan, France, Singapore, South Korea and India, the report said.

“The U.S. has been teetering on the brink of becoming a flawed democracy for several years, and even if there had been no presidential election in 2016, its score would have slipped below 8.00,” the report explained. Instead, dwindling trust in government, elected representatives and political parties is to blame.

“Trust in political institutions is an essential component of well-functioning democracies. Yet surveys by Pew, Gallup and other polling agencies have confirmed that public confidence in government has slumped to historic lows in the U.S. This has had a corrosive effect on the quality of democracy,” the report found.

The increasing role played by non-elected technocrats, increased voter abstention and curbs on civil liberties are among the main symptoms of this global malaise, the EIU said, noting that almost half of the 167 countries covered by its index registered a decline in overall scores between 2006 and 2016.
