UN & Red Cross Say Record Suffering Globally: Noticing Who “All of Them” are, is The First Step

An unprecedented call for action to stop suffering by ending conflict has been issued by the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Ban Ki-moon, along with the head of the International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC), Peter Maurer.

But what does calling for an end to global sufferingh mean? Does this mean end to all wars and violence, which is practically impossible and does this mean, then, sending in UN peace keeping force, on massive levels, all across the globe violent points, or does this mean helping those in need, such as refugees?

Speaking together at the UN in Geneva, both men warned that a disregard for basic humanity now reigned, with Mr Ban insisting: “Even war has rules.”

The UN chief made reference to the “brazen and brutal erosion of respect for international humanitarian law”, which was characterized by indiscriminate attacks on civilians areas, such as one reported yesterday in a marketplace in Syria and credited to government forces.

“This flouts the very raison d’etre of the UN,” its chief, Ban Ki-moon, said.
International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) President Peter Maurer said the world had rarely witnessed so much suffering and instability.
They urged immediate concrete steps to ease the plight of civilians in places like Afghanistan, Nigeria and Syria.

BBC reports: It is the first time the two bodies have issued a joint warning, says the BBC’s Imogen Foulkes in Geneva, in a sign of desperation over the spread of conflicts across the world.

‘Defying basic humanity’

“Rarely before have we witnessed so many people on the move,” Mr Maurer told reporters at a joint news conference with Mr Ban in Geneva on Saturday.

He said some 60 million people globally had been displaced from their homes because of conflict and violence – “the highest figure since World War Two”.

In a statement, the two leaders said today’s wars were being waged “in complete defiance of basic humanity”.

Mr Maurer said this applied to combatants in the conflicts in Afghanistan, Iraq, Nigeria, South Sudan and Yemen.

Lets look at some human suffering:
